Dr Christian Farrugia , Chairman

Dr Christian Farrugia obtained his Master’s degree in maritime and insurance law from the University of London (UCL) and his doctorate in Maltese law from the University of Malta in 1986. Dr Farrugia has been appointed an examiner of doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Laws of the University of Malta. He has also been a member of the Chamber of Advocates since 1988 and of the Chamber of Commerce since 1998. He is a Director and secretary of several companies, including Alliance Trust Company Ltd., an MFSA licenced fiduciary and trustee, as well as a Director of iMovo Ltd. and Abbey International Insurance PCC Ltd. He is an independent non-executive Director and the current Chairman of the Board of BAWAG Malta Bank Ltd.

Mr. George Portanier

Mr Portanier was appointed to the bank’s Board during 2018. He was previously a member on the Board of Bank of Valletta plc, having also served on the Executive Committee, as Chairman of the Compliance Committee and on other Board Committees. He was also the CEO of his family concern, involved in the soft drinks bottling sector. Throughout his career, Mr Portanier also held CEO positions in a payments service sector, and, more recently, at the Malta Institute of Taxation. He had graduated Masters in Finance and Investment from York University, MBA from Edinburgh University and Masters in the Economics of Competition Law from the University of Malta.

Mr. Samuel Morrow

Mr. Morrow was appointed Chief Financial Officer of MFC Industrial Ltd. in 2014. Mr. Morrow is a Chartered Financial Analyst and was most recently a Vice President of MFC in Vienna, Austria. He has been a key participant in the acquisitions of FESIL AS and F.J. Elsner & Co. in 2014. Before joining MFC, Mr. Morrow was Vice President of Tanaka Capital Management and Treasurer, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer of the Tanaka Growth Fund. Mr. Morrow is a graduate of St. Lawrence University and has completed credits towards a Masters in Business Administration (Langone Program) at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University.

Dr. Otto Karasek

Mr. Otto Karasek is currently the Managing Director of the Bank. From 2003 to 2014 Mr. Karasek held a range of responsibilities including CEO, Executive Director, member of the Personnel, Remuneration and Nomination Committee and the Credit Committee. Mr. Karasek was responsible for the operation and the business of the BAWAG Group in Malta and the implementation of its business strategy. Prior to 2003 Mr. Karasek filled various roles at BAWAG Austria in Vienna for over 20 years. He holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration.
